Are you proud of America?
Growing up my family was always patriotic, my father was a hero in WWII and continued serving this country as a police officer for 24 years and my brother served in Vietnam. We flew the flag for Memorial Day, July 4th, all the related patriotic holidays and attended the town’s parades while the patriotic songs of American pride always made my mom cry from pride and emotion. Yet I have come to be very disappointed with our country, somehow we have steered off course from a proud nation where the people came first to a money driven “what they don’t know won’t hurt them” philosophy. A country where the all mighty dollar means more than a life and the health of a person as long as money is being made, the disregard for our needs and safe products has no meaning with the large companies that put the products on our shelves. Along with these companies goes the government official’s that take the campaign contributions from these companies to ensure the dangerous products with toxic ingredients can stay on the shelves unquestioned and advertised as safe. Safe as used, safe amounts, that’s what we are told regarding the toxins in our cosmetics, food, all the way to the formaldehyde in our kitchen cabinets or asbestos still being used in products we use every day.
Are you still proud? America, where we are suppose to be the leaders in democracy and pride of our people and our way of life. Yet Europe, despite unrelenting pressure from the Bush administration passed bans and laws to protect their citizens from toxins and any questionable chemicals in their cosmetics and everyday products their population uses. They feel the health and welfare of their citizens and future generations are worth more than the money offered from large companies or the adamant pressure the Bush administration put on them to not pass these bans and laws. Bush did this because the large chemical companies are the biggest contributors to the Republican Party along with his campaign at the time. These companies such as Revlon, Estee Lauder, Proctor & Gamble, etc. did not want the European Union to change their laws because they did not want the American citizens to demand the same fair treatment for our own health.
(Read the full report http://www.safecosmetics.org/downloads/Waxman-report_2004.pdf). But the European Union did not cave and those laws and bans of toxic ingredients have been put in place making a safer environment for their country and the people, so while the Europeans get the better products from these companies listed above we Americans still get the chemical ridden substandard products that are killing us. While Europe and other countries ban formaldehyde for gluing together wood based products, such as kitchen cabinets America still imports these hazardous products for us to buy and use, again we get the toxic ridden products while other countries find safe alternatives. Why are other countries banning toxic chemicals while we still use them as we are kept in the dark or told they are safe, is there something we’re not getting? Why are other countries ahead of us in environmental and other ways when America is suppose to be a leader and role model in this world? As far as I am concerned if there is even a chance of a health risk we should be spared of the threat, there are so many dangers to us out there and while the producers of these dangers claim purity and safety we are getting sick and dying while our government turns a blind eye to this atrocity it is Americas genocide.
When do we as citizens stand together and say enough?!! When do we as the true America, the people who truly own this country say we want this stopped?!! We the American people who keep this country going; we are the ones that care for each other and try to help our fellow citizens and the ones who others reach out to from all over the world. Don’t we deserve, at the least, safety in the products we buy, use, breath and eat? Safety from toxins that are pushing up our cancer rates, autism, reproductive problems, ADHD, and a variety of other illnesses that were almost unheard of not that many years ago. Behind this surge of disease and illness are the chemicals in our food, cosmetics, hygiene products, building materials, pesticides, every single thing around us that we eat, sleep on, breath, or handle. These toxic chemicals are taken into our bodies everyday in everything we do until our body is so beaten down we develop one or more of the life threatening illnesses and even pass them on to our unborn children through our body and even breast milk.
Can it be stopped? Yes. Will it be stopped? Only if we take a stand and make it happen as one voice saying NO, we want a change, we want to be healthy we don’t want to be fooled by false claims of safety we want to know we are. Our health and safety is in our hands but we have to demand it without falter without taking no for an answer.
Are you still proud of America? Healthcare is the number one topic these days but is anyone talking about why the crisis is happening in the first place? We wouldn’t be in “crisis” and the cost of health care wouldn’t be so out if control if prevention of these health problems were addressed in the first place. If we were healthy to begin with there wouldn’t be such a crisis, if we were not being poisoned on a daily basis we wouldn’t need over priced drugs or treatments that can cause debilitating side effects or death. Wake up America we are being murdered and being asked to pay for it! Chemicals in everything we use and eat that cause cancer, additives and ingredients that are making us obese leading to heart disease and diabetes, dyes in food that cause ADHD and childhood maladies, growth hormones and antibiotics in our meat and dairy that cause disease and abnormal growth, early puberty, childhood cancer including breast cancer, do you really believe this is normal, do you really believe that this is not the result of the chemicals we are taking in every day? Who will save us? We have to we as a nation have to make a stand for our salvation.
Are you still proud of America? I am proud of the America my family fought for and served, I am proud of what America once stood for, freedom and justice for all. I am proud of all the citizens who make the effort to change our circumstances for the better, I am proud of the land that has not yet been contaminated or destroyed and mourn for the land that has. I am proud of the people that struggle every day yet lend a hand to a neighbor in need. I am proud of the concept of America as it was once built I fear what it has become. I am proud of the founding fathers and the honorable Americans that hold fast to their morals and commendable ideals yet am ashamed of the modern government full of corruption at the expense of the people and the immoral behavior of those in office. I am proud of our flag though feel it should not be touched or flown by the people that go against everything America is suppose to stand for. I am proud and honor those, like my mother and sister, who have died from cancer when the possibility of preventing it may not have been in their control. I am proud of the soldiers that fight and defend even when the cause may be questionable. I am ashamed of the powers of a government that puts our soldiers in harm’s way for their own personal gain or ill ideals. I am proud of American made from the few companies left here that make clean quality products that are being phased out for imports of toxic products from other countries that have no place in our homes or take our jobs.
America is my home and I believe in the everyday people that keep it going I just hope we all realize to get back to what America once stood for can only come back if we take a united stand and demand, boycott, whatever it takes to become a nation to be proud of where health of people and country is priority above money or anything else. Where sea to shining sea doesn’t mean shining seas from oil spills, garbage or pollutants, where rocket’s red glare means fireworks in celebration not bombs with mushroom clouds or smoke stacks causing the pollution and discoloration of our air. Where the fields of wheat and other crops grow from organic healthy soil not ridden with pesticides and genetically altered seeds, where the animals graze freely on clean grass not injected with hormones and antibiotics jammed into a small fenced in areas to breed disease and pollute the air and water, where profit is not the goal at the cost of our lives. Where our blood, sweat and tears do not test positive for BPA, parabens, phthalates and other toxic chemicals from the very products we use or put on and in our body but where our children can glow with health and wellness from a healthy environment and the best nutrition, where cancer, heart disease and other rampant diseases are a rare occurrence or just the natural order of dying from old age. Oh say can you see, it is a dream but one worth fighting for.
